Children can Use their Talents for God
How do I know what my child’s talents are? Discovering your child’s talents is the first step in helping your child to use their talents for God. If you have not yet identified your child’s gifts, check out our tips on How to Discover Your Child’s Talents.
How can my children use their talents for God? After you discover your child’s talents, they can begin using them for God. The best way to begin using his or her gifts to glorify God is to identify which talents they enjoy using, and which ones your child would like to invest time in. Consider things that come naturally to your child, whether that is a sport, an art, a subject in school, or a social skill.
Use Gifts to Glorify God
Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.
1 Peter 4:10 (NIV)
The Bible tells us that each one of us has been gifted in special ways to serve God. Each one. That includes children too. There are several opportunities for children from preschool age (and younger) to teenagers to use their talents for God. Here are ten ways kids can use their talents to serve at church and in their community.
- Music – Children who are gifted musically can play an instrument or sing with the choir or worship team, or perhaps you could form your own children’s worship team that could play or sing for friends and family.
- Art – Do you have children who love art? Give them the responsibility of designing the cards that the church sends to first-time visitors or shut-ins. Have them help design and decorate the bulletin boards at the church. They can also create artwork or cards for residents at local nursing homes.
- Reading – If you have children who love to read, take them to the preschool class and have them read the Bible story from a storybook to the younger kids. Have them read a Bible verse, offering meditation, or have them read stories to the kids in the nursery. They can also read to children at their local library.
- Teaching / Leading – Your older child may be a natural teacher or leader. You can develop these abilities by pairing them up with the lead teacher in the preschool class. Allow them to assist in leading a class at church. They can also find volunteer opportunities to assist in leading or teaching at the library or YMCA.
- Friendliness – You might not think of a child’s friendliness as a gift, but kindness is a fruit of God’s Spirit. Children can help by being greeters at church or helping pass out bulletins. They can be friendly by befriending a new kid at their school or kind to a child who is playing alone at the playground.
- Cleaning / Organizing – Some children are gifted in organizing. Give them the responsibility of reorganizing the materials after class, have them help with the cleaning of the building, or put them in charge of the art closet. They can also help an elderly person with yard work, or a cancer patient with housecleaning.
- Cooking – If you have children that like to cook, ask them to make cookies once a month for the class or to take to first-time visitors or shut-ins. Have them help in the kitchen during special dinners so they can learn from the adults who normally cook for activities. They can also bake snacks for friends, family, or teachers as a kind gesture.
- Writing – Have children who love to write and compose write letters to shut-ins or first-time visitors. Have a bulletin board that showcases their newest poems or short stories. Let them know that their contributions are important! They can also write letters and poems to penpals or residents of nursing homes.
- Technology – Technology seems to be a gift for many kids. Help them use their gifts in ways that can benefit the church. They can help manage the church website or during services, you can put them in charge of running the sound and PowerPoint. They can also help friends or family members who may not be as technically inclined.
- Evangelize – Maybe you have children who love to tell others about God. Teach them how to share their testimony, and then have them do that, both while on visitations, and also in front of the rest of the congregation. Have them share their testimony at special events, or as part of an outreach to the community.
When we serve, we are not just doing a job or a chore, we are serving in the name of Jesus. It’s not just a good work, it’s a God work.
If you want your children to stay strong in their faith, then encourage them to use their talents for God. It will change their life and help them love and follow Jesus for a lifetime.
